I liked From Hell more than I liked Watchmen, as a true crime fan the story of Jack The Ripper is something that I know a good amount about and From Hell had been on my reading list for awhile. While I found the book fun and interesting story sometimes everything just felt like Moore was rambling and just showing off how much he knew. Strangely really enjoyed the notes in the back where Moore is just showing off things he knows about Jack the Ripper and clarified certain choices made in the story and his beliefs on the actual White chapel murders.
The weird stuff in the book is enough to keep me interested and thankful there’s more of that than there is just Moore listing things which made my eyes glaze over. With the exception of these moments I still enjoyed From Hell.

Dense and creepy as hell, appropriately.

There is nothing so tedious as men blathering on about Masonic lore, especially in a book where five women should be the focus.

I didn't enjoy the way it was written. I read a lot of graphic novels but I had a hard time reading the old English

To be sure, this is a masterpiece. Just, an unenjoyable and confusing one, in my opinion. Had I more time, I would read through the whole first appendix and read the explanations of each page of each chapter, and perhaps I would appreciate it more, but just knowing that those explanations and backgrounds exist at least make me appreciate the grandiosity of this project.

The story itself is actually quite interesting, particularly the theory on the how the murders tie in with Masonry (a subject brought into the story quite early on, so I don't think that's a spoiler). It's quite clear that Moore thoroughly researched the events surrounding the murders, and apparently the whole novel is very accurate to what we know happened. All that being said, there were so many characters (that all look too similar, as they were drawn in small, black-and-white ink, so they're sometimes difficult to distinguish) and so many quick scene changes, that for most of the novel, keeping track of what was going on was terribly difficult for me.

I didn't really enjoy the novel, but it still gets 3 stars for being such a grand piece of art.

This did not work for me. I did not like the art style. I found the story sprawling and confusing, I could barely follow it. I didn't even like the FONT used. A complete and utter miss for me.

Just way too grim for me at that point in my life and where the world was sitting (2021). I also didn't like the art style at all, which made it tough for me to differentiate characters and locations. Impressive piece of work though for sure.
