This book will always have me questioning the way things work and the power of knowledge and thought. With the current state of the world, it does make me think even more this time around. 

This isn’t my favorite classic to read but it is such an important text.

Das politische System und die Intrigen sind interessant. Am Anfang (und gegen Ende) aber etwas langweilig. Wenn die Ideologie erklärt wird, wiederholt sich sehr viel.
Der Plot, dass sich die junge Frau an den alten Protagonisten ranmacht (und es als Kompliment sieht dass er sie davor so gehasst hat dass er sie vergewaltigen wollte? Wtf?) kam aus dem Nichts und konnte ich nicht nachvollziehen.

I’m very glad I picked up the audiobook, I’ve tried to read classics before but struggled to because the style they’re written in is hard for me to get into. Listening to it was much better though and I’ll have to do that for other classics I’ve been meaning to read. 

I’ve much enjoyed listening to this book and it made me think a lot about what the government in this book and the government for the country I live in have in common (a decent amount it seems, which isn’t a good look haha). The ending wasn’t exactly what I had hoped for but the book is meant to be realistic, so I do suppose the ending does make sense.

I can understand why it's concidered a classic, and the story is interesting, but most of what the book says about dictatorship and politics is pretty underwhelming and nothing you wouldn't know from paying attention in highschool history. This paired with the mid writing style and very in-your-face misogyny really took away from what would have otherwise been a pretty decent read.

So here's the thing: 

This is a brilliant book...and I also didn't particularly enjoy reading it. It's immensely thought-provoking and is of the type that I think one should read. The political analysis and commentary will leave you reconsidering the world, both now and in the past. There is certainly a reason why this book is so well-known and widely referenced. 

However, I found the writing style very confusing (I was looking up words every other page) and the frequent time jumps left me rereading passages. There is something to say about Orwell intentionally using this unclear style on purpose to emphasize his messaging, but it still made for a slow read (for me). 

I think I'll be coming back in a few months or years to reread this with a new perspective.
