Very interesting and deep but the story sucked at some point where there was only talk about Julia, Like okay I get that she's beautiful and you like her body but what about the system?

It took me nearly 6 months to finish this book. I dragged it with me through 9 countries - on work, leisure, and academia trips. I hated it, I loved it. Sometimes I couldn’t manage to even read one page, sometimes I read 100 in one sitting.

This book is made me think about everything, question my reality, triggered my anxiety at the same time. I had so many thoughts on it - this copy is one of the few that is heavily annotated now that I’ve finished reading it.
And I will read it again. Maybe next spring. And I am sure that after that, I will reread it again in like 5-10 years. And pile up my annotations and thoughts.

This story gains importance with every year. Especially now, with Brexit going on, reading 1984 feels like a parody of everything that is happening around me. The propaganda, the mind control, the zombie-like behaviour of the characters... all the things portrayed in the book are now reality - and that’s what scares and amazes me at the same time!

It is a book that I foresee to play a role in my life for many years. And I cannot wait to reread it at a different point in my life and see how fitting it will be then. It is a timeless critique of society, on human behaviour, and on power abuse.

I hated it. And I loved it at the same time. It is easily one of my favourite books I’ve ever read!

Não faz meu estilo de leitura, terminei o livro por estar em um clube do livro, mas foi uma leitura muito difícil e lenta para mim.

I don't like when the power resides in the hands of those who try to control human minds and nature But it is what it is.

Good book.

For me, a person living in a post-communism country was this book especially important. I'm still wondering about things which were happening here and can't just understand, how was something like that possible. Eventhough this book has actually nothing in common with the real situation (when it was written before it really happened) is dangerously similar.

18/07/2020:
Okey... wow.

Ah, the good old days when the author had a message, that message is darn well getting through and maybe he'll fit some story in around the edges.

The most interesting part of this is the tactics of totalitarianism. Changing the story, redefining words, inculcating the people into self policing. That stuff's all interesting and useful to put the tactics down clearly.

Within the context of the story, I doubt that the Party is quite as immortal as they claim. For one, a world spanning empire run by sadistic, duplicitous psychopaths isn't going to be a particularly cooperative place. I can't imagine that everyone's going to go along with all the crap as long as they get their taste of power. Human nature is not infinitely malleable after all. And at some point there's going to be bread riots.

And O'Brien is apparently some mid level torturer who knows the inner workings and deep plans of the party? Sure, right, whatever you say.

But all of that does serve to drive home the horror of the tactics and endgame I mentioned above.

Overall, I'm glad that I read it.
