This one has a completely different feel to it than the first book did. And, honestly, I enjoyed the first one quite a bit more. While I completely appreciate the fact that the main characters would talk and act like adults, it was missing the dominance and heat that the first one had in spades.

This time around our human female is Gail. She was vet on Earth and was a thinker, which was great because she thought about things instead of freaking out and acting stupid. Trying to figure out why should would have been brought here, the only thing she can think of is her history of dealing with animals. When a huge, purple man appears where her shuttle lands, she knows he's there waiting for her. *As a side note...why was Gail able to almost immediately speak the native language when it took Sunny so much longer? If it's the implant that is allowing it, shouldn't it have been that quick for all of them?

We met Pup briefly in the last book, so it was already apparent that he was different than Kaneer. And we find out just how different. School yard bullies had a huge part in shaping how Pup turned out to be, but he also sees himself as more progressive in how women should be treated. In other words, he may be an alpha but he hardly dominates his woman. He has spent pretty much his whole scholarly life studying the prophecy about the omega mothers and he is convinced that the accepted translation of them is wrong. He's also certain that he is destined to be the mate of one of the omegas. So he takes a huge risk to get up to the surface and claim his destiny.

Like I said, these two act like adults from the moment they meet. Which was great. Pup explains things as best as he can, and Gail listens to what he tells her. She does what he tells her because he knows this planet and she quickly trusts him. Obviously the attraction between these two is strong, but they both fight it as long as they can. Until Gail enters heat and Pup is driven to provide her relief. Which in turn, bonds them forever. Something that Gail takes remarkably well considering.

At first, I really enjoyed these two. But it fast became kind of boring because absolutely nothing was happening this time. When Pup gets captured by Kaneer's people, it did get a tiny bit better. But it wasn't until the end when Pup and Gail must sneak into the underground settlement and steal something that there was any type of excitement. They encounter a surprising number of people on Pup's side and learn that Gail has a....umm....power. I mean, it was really stupid what she can do. But it was effective and saved them, so whatever.

Eventually everything works out and they meet back up with Kaneer and Sunny. With the book ending with us meeting another human woman and her surprising mate.

Ended up skimming it. The world building is kind of confusing and there’s this talk of prophecy etc and I felt the story got bogged down. The heroine didn’t have a strong voice so I just skimmed.
