I got extremely nostalgic while reading this book because I had read it back when I was in fifth grade. Even then, I remember how much this book impacted me and the way I thought about things. Reading it again, it was like those feelings were happening all over again and it was amazing.
This book is a middle-grade story about a boy named Mick Harte who dies from a head injury after falling off of his bike. His sister Phoebe figures out her life after that and who she is without her brother. It's quite short so you can probably finish it in no time and it's definitely a book that will leave you thinking.

I barely succeeded in holding back tears on this one. Barely. I thought I was going to make it, but the ending--ugh, so sad. Anyone who doesn't wear their bike helmet; I dare you to read this book. That thing will become your best friend.
I'd read Junie B. Jones when I was younger and loved it, and I have to say I'm a bit surprised that these books came from the same author. Both of them are very good, but they're so different. Junie B. Jones made me laugh hysterically, and Mick Harte gave me a lump in my throat.
Mick Harte Was Here is short, but it doesn't need to be long. It gets you attached to the characters, makes you tear up, and delivers its message, all in 88 pages.
Also, the book isn't preachy. The message (Wearing bike helmets can save lives) is presented in a way that doesn't shove it down your throat.
Another thing that made this book so great is that the Harte's grief is presented in a very real way. Barbara Park did an excellent job of portraying their emotions as realistically as possible.
After this book, I am definitely always going to wear a helmet. I don't care how dorky I think it makes me look, or what it does to my hair. I'm wearing it. If anyone thinks that wearing a helmet isn't important, I would recommend they read Mick Harte Was Here.

God this moved me. Park writes in such a way that Mick felt so real. I loved the sibling relationship and all the spot on description of all of the things that go through someone’s head when they lose a loved one.

This book was so affecting to me as a kid. I read it again and again and thought about Mick every time I got on my bicycle. I had forgotten about it till just recently and had to google around a bit to find out what it was called. As soon as an image of the book popped up I was immediately hit with that same feeling it used to give me as a kid. Some books just stay with you, this is one.

This was my first re-read since college, when I read this for my Children’s Literature course (one of my favorite classes ever!). It still made me laugh, with a lump in my throat the whole time. And from the Junie B. Jones author, no less!

This book was just about everything I want in a children's book. I laughed, I cried, I couldn't stop reading until I'd finished the whole thing in one sitting.

I've reread this one a number of times too - it's such a short, sweet story about loss that gets me every time.
