I picked this book up on whim based on the moody, dark cover and had no expectations. This book has a slow and steady pace, starting with a murder and slowly introducing us to the whole cast of characters and the idyllic town it's based in. Lots of pop culture references that aren't jarringly placed in, from Nancy Drew to Columbo to Shirley Jackson; I enjoyed connecting to them all. I enjoyed reading about a protagonist who wanted to figure out the murder of her friend, even when she knew she was way out of her depth at times. I was impressed that this was the author's debut, as I was captivated with each character and scene she described, and didn't find myself breezing (a.k.a. skimming) through descriptive paragraphs.
A great book to read, especially by a fire with a cup of tea. Eagerly awaiting the next book(s) by Hilliard!!!
