Note: This is my rating and review for the entire series.

WOW WOW WOW WOW! Talk about a series that absolutely exceeds your expectations.

First off, the art. Absolutely incredible (as it should be for dropping a chapter every 2-4 months lol). with the worldbuilding being one of the strong points, the art does a fantastic job at developing it and bringing the ideas to life. The ever-expansive, mysterious abyss that contains wonders you cannot find anywhere else in the world, is the heart and soul of the series. Everyone who descends into the abyss has a reason, and their ambitions and desires are explored and portrayed incredibly.

This series tries to hide itself as a fun journey by exploring the story through the eyes of young children, but in reality, the abyss is cruel. From child experimentation, death, murder, abuse, and sexual assault, the abyss is cruel.

Made is Abyss is a masterpiece in fantasy manga.

The tone of this manga is weirdly lighthearted for the darkness of the premise. It was grating. I like the premise, though. I kind of wish it was handled with more seriousness.

Beautiful art, love the story, but really, I'd say this gets knocked down from 4 stars to 3 1/2, only because there's so much...questionable content with the kids. Like, I'm talking questionable sexual content. I get that this is supposed to be eerie and that there's a shit ton of violence and gore later on, but do we really need all the jokes about Riko shoving rulers up the robot boy's butt? I'm invested in the story because I want an unsettling atmosphere but not...That kind of unsettling atmosphere.

I had the same problem with the anime, and was hoping that it was lessened in the manga. I'll chalk it up as a (failed) attempt to further the ~spooky horror ickiness~ with the kids for now, but it does make me weary of what's to come. Still, the overall world-building and the intrigue of the abyss itself is enough to keep me reading more volumes, but...I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up getting tossed in the "dropped" series pile if it keeps all that up. Weird, vaguely rape-y jokes about twelve-year-olds are kind of a deal-breaker!!
