If you like The Bold Type, this book is for you. Former editior-in-chief of Nylon Gabrielle Korn shares a collection of essays and short stories that discuss many of the hot-button topics surrounding women today, especially women in the fashion and beauty industry.
Women in positions of power are constantly a controversial topic. In my opinion, it seems like it would make sense for women to be in these positions in an industry that is marketed specifically towards women, and yet, there still seems to be so much confusion when people see women in high-level positions. Gabrielle Korn spent many years of her career battling not only the struggles that come with climbing the ladder in fashion and beauty magazine editing, but also battling her own personal issues such as body image and eating disorders, dating and love as a lesbian in New York City, and the ever-growing age of technology and social media. While individuals are constantly trying to put/keep her down, she battles her way to the top - but not without facing a myriad of problems along the way.
I found this collection to be both eye-opening and engaging to listen to. As a woman, I was constantly frustrated for the author and her uphill battles she faced in her career, knowing that many women have and still do continue to face these things every day. Even in this current climate of feminist uprising, we continue to be pushed down by the patriarchy. Korn calls women to action to help make strides towards bettering the situation, but it's going to take us all working together to make the changes. This book will inspire you to help be that change.
