I'm going to let @youshouldreadthisif vet all my horror books for me, because she knows how to pick the ones I'll like too. What a gut punch of a book. The romance, the zombie virus plague, the pure human messy emotions that come with the end of the world. 😭😭
I'm really impressed with how much Vesely packs into this novella.

I so enjoyed this genre-defying novella. I’m not generally into zombie stories, but this premise right here is exactly how I can be lured into reading one. It’s zombie fiction that isn’t actually about the zombies.

It’s a love story, or rather a story about love. The fragile beginnings of learning how to love another person and messing it up because you’re scared and unsure. Discovering all the wonderful ways you fit together. The grief of knowing that the end of your story is coming and the bittersweet melancholy of a love well lived together, even if it was shorter than you wanted. Of watching, helpless, the deterioration of someone you love and making painful decisions. Of giving your person permission to be happy without you, with another person, even if they don’t want to. Of remembering, like the beautiful parts are happening all over again.

I cried while writing this, if that tells you anything.

I think the most important aspect of any good zombie story is the question - when is someone no longer themselves because of the actions they're forced to take? This novella took that question and explored it in such an unexpected way. This is the story of Lyle and Jude, two regular people who f*** up and still love each other. Now add an viral outbreak and an event that will forever change their relationship, and who they are. GOLD. The connection to suffering while a loved one suffers is brilliantly rendered through the scope of a horror/zombie lens and Vesely's writing is beautiful. Whether you like horror, romance, contemporary, or just need a good cry - READ THIS BOOK.
