 4.5☆!

MY FIRST RILEY SAGER BOOK AND DEFINITELY NOT MY LAST. Thrillers are always hit or miss, and this one HIT!! The chapters were the perfect length, fast paced, on the edge of my seat, the writing style was perfect, realistic main character, suspicious side characters, SO many twists and turns. I never would have expected that ending, and the events leading up to it were INSANE. I'm still pondering the reality of the Bartholomew, and am STILL left with questions I NEED the answers to. Jules's sister? Greta Manville? ANSWERS PLEASE.

3.5 stars. I was hooked but then as things started getting revealed I was like meh. I think my expectations were too high. It was definitely entertaining though.

Thanks to Netgalley.com for a review copy of this book.

Jules can’t believe her good luck when she finds a job “apartment sitting” at the Bartholomew and will get paid $4,000 a month for 3 months to do it. She is down on her luck and between jobs, so she jumps at the chance to interview for the position. She is so excited that she ignores big red flags that her best friend Chloe keeps warning her about, like the fact that she can’t leave the apartment at night, and she isn’t allowed any visitors. Then Jules meets Ingrid, a neighbor she becomes friendly with, who tells her the dark history of the Bartholomew. At first she tells herself she didn’t believe in ghost stories, but when Ingrid goes missing the next night, Jules is determined to find out what happened to Ingrid and rescue her. Lock Every Door is a page turner you’re not going to want to put down until the last page.

It's difficult to look a gift horse in the mouth when your life and living situation is in disarray, but sometimes things truly are too good to be true in Riley Sager's Lock Every Door.

Jules Larsen's life has been filled with hardships of one variety of another over the years, starting with the disappearance of her sister Jane, the simultaneous deaths of her parents, the loss of her job, immediately followed by her cheating boyfriend and their apartment. Downtrodden and desperate for a place to live and a way to earn money, Jules seizes a job opportunity to be an apartment sitter within the famed Bartholomew. Provided a list of strict rules, Jules begins her interlude of residing in splendor as she works to get her life back in order. While getting to know the Bartholomew as well as its staff and residents, Jules becomes drawn to fellow apartment sitter Ingrid and is entertained by the dark history of the building - until Ingrid goes missing, when that entertainment turns to concern, fear, and dogged determination to uncover the truth of what goes on behind the doors of the Bartholomew.

A story that draws you in with the combination of a glimpse into the life of the other (hello, wealth and luxury!), creepiness of a haunting past, and the allure of a mystery to be solved, the experiences Jules has while at the Bartholomew compound upon one another until they become too much to continue to cope with. Though the reveal easy to anticipate, the writing was generally quite good as it developed the scenario and characters, trying to slowly build some suspense and allowing Jules's mind to run rampant with numerous possible answers; however, I found that after the climax, the falling action was a touch underwhelming when compared with the tone established in the preceding pages.

Overall, I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5 stars.

This is the first book of Riley Sager that I have given 5 shining ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I love the storyline. I love the twist. I love the reveal. I just think that the bad experience of Jules having to have a family went missing is a huge factor in her mission to find Ingrid and all the secrets hidden in Bartholomew. In Bartholomew, I hope it really is just a fictional building. That is some scary shit happening underground if it’s real.
