I was excited about this book, mostly because of the beautiful cover, but it was disappointing. The main character is very selfish and self-centered which is why I don't feel like we got to know the other characters well. The main character was very ungrateful and honestly just rude to her mother. I get that she wanted this party, but the party felt more important than the well-being of her mother and her friendship with her best friend.

June is pride moth, and this year I decided to pick a YA LGBTQ+ book to read. I also picked up Friday I'm in Love because the colorfulness of the book cover and the diversity of the characters.
As Mahalia Harris prepares to throw the coming-out party of her dreams, she finds herself swept up in a whirlwind of excitement, nerves, and romance, all while navigating the complexities of being a queer Black teenager. I found Mahalia's journey to self-discovery and love to be just as captivating and inspiring. Yes, it is a book for YA and as I am not in that age range reader anymore I found Mahalia self-absorbed in her wants and needs and forgets her family and friends, I felt times that she forgot that there are significant issues and insignificant issues in real life. There were themes in the plot that I saw with an adult perspective and for that reason I had hard time to pick up the book and read it. Well, I finished the book because of the audiobook and my daily walks.

Not mad I read it, but probably wouldn’t recommend. Maybe I missed it, but what was up with the tension and fight between Naomi and Mahalia? Mahalia’s song lists were distracting.
Graphic: Homophobia and Racism
Moderate: Racial slurs, Sexual content, and Outing
