A quiet and poignant play about being a human in this world. I loved it— especially when reading it alongside Ann Patchett’s Tom Lake.

I love this play. It is thought-provoking and beautiful. Wilder tells the story of the day-to-day happenings in a small, old-fashioned American town, but those happenings are comparable and applicable to today. He writes simultaneously of joys, sorrows, and struggles in a very human way. Beautiful to read and especially to watch.

Spurred to re-read this play after it figured prominently in Tamara Ireland Stone’s Little Do We Know, I was just as enchanted with this reading as I was with my first reading while in high school. The small glimpses at life with the larger lessons on living life were eye-opening in a way they were not when I first read the play. Life experience, folks. It really does affect how you read and what you get from the readings!

I read this because my friend made me, and I actually enjoyed it. It wasn't what I expected, but it was still pretty good.

Every year I try to branch out and read books I normally wouldn't (poetry, drama, etc.). Sometimes I find something that really is amazing and I'm so glad that I pushed my comfort zone a bit. This time I felt kind of "eh" about this. There wasn't really anything to dislike and nothing to really be super excited about either. Slice of life type stories (as this one is) can be kind of "eh" for me, especially if I have trouble connecting to any of the characters. I really appreciated the timeless aspect of the play and how well it still holds up to today's troubles and concerns. I also liked that the play was very minimally staged so it was fairly easy to "set" the stage in my mind. I may have liked this more as a production rather than reading it and I would be curious to see it performed to see if I would have a greater connection with an actual actor rather than just the written words for the characters.
