challenging dark emotional reflective sad medium-paced
Gut-wrenching and incisive look at police injustice and the ongoing effects of racial apartheid against indigenous communities, specifically the aftershocks of the residential school system for a community in Thunder Bay.

The author goes deep to look at individual cases of children who died while attending a northern boarding school, and how each of their deaths reflects issues that marginalize and oppress indigenous communities in Canada. The biggest factor is the mishandling of these cases by police and authorities, and the government's failure to meet their promises and obligations. It's disturbing, infuriating, and emotional. The author also does a good job of making the public personal and the personal public, which is needed to understand these issues.

This is an essential read for anyone interested in indigenous issues, police injustice, racism, apartheid, Canadian history, residential schools, and how authorities fail to serve marginalized communities. It's not a fun read but will change you for the better after reading.
