I've never read such perfect angst and grovelling in a book until now, my god I love you zoey draven
Compared to the first book, this had a much more light-hearted feel to it, which perfectly highlighted the different characteristics and personalities of the main characters, a skill that I find most books to lack as despite having different protagonists, they feel like cookie cutter versions of one another.

Seerin is such a sweetheart, not the brightest, but a lovely male lead regardless. His pairing with Nelle made so much sense and I loved the two of them together, just them being silly in their own little bubble
This was one of my favourites to read for sure! Also, can I add Dakkari to the languages that I know now because I'm recognising a lot at this point lol

I think my dude went too far and although the grovel was GOOD like idk if there's any coming back from that? The ooof combo of trauma from both of them plus the double denying he loves her? Nah man. I think he was done.

Nelle was great. I love a blunt (autistic coded?) FMC. Especially one that like to learn and ask questions.

I finally finished this after putting it down for three months. I skimmed through a lot of it because the angst and heart break was too much for me.

I don't think I'll continue with the series.

Original review after DNF -
I may finish this eventually, but it was taking so long and the characters started to irritate me with all the angst. I actually like this book better than the first, but I just am not in the mood for it right now.

Rarely is a sequel better than the first but this is an exception. Nelle's story especially drew me in from the start and I can't wait to read more in this series.

I enjoyed it a LOT, far and above the first book.

I was especially thrilled with Nelle as a character. The way she's codified as having autism or something similar was done really well. She's relatable to me and she feels like a whole person with depth and layers rather than a list of symptoms or stereotypes. I loved the way she handled herself and I really enjoyed reading the relationship develop with Rath Tuviri. I loved his little nickname for her and Nelle's friendships with other members of the horde.

The horde king of Rath Tuviri was an interesting character, the little orphan that fought his way from the streets of Dothik all the way up to Vorakkar. He was a great choice for the second book as the reader draws a natural comparison to Arokan of Rath Kitala from book one, last of a long line of revered horde kings.

The only thing that really bothered me was that I wish there was something a bit more tangible about Rath Tuviri seeing the light of Kakkari in Nelle and what that meant. It was just a little too vague for me but I clearly didn't have an issue letting it slide. I was also less than pleased with some of his decisions concerning Nelle and the unnecessary drama/angst (cue eyeroll here) but it at least felt solidly rooted in decent character development and not done solely to tweak with our emotions, haha.

Beautiful and emotional love story between two souls who’ve seen some shit. This series is my new IPB-esque palate cleanser / escapism romance read.
Fair warning, if you don’t like pregnancy plots you may not love this series overall (not central but similar to Ice Planet Barbarians)
