Book Club #1
I believe the point of these stories is that they’re deceptively simple, but to be honest, they just came across as simple. I wasn’t sure what the major point he was trying to make with them all was - not that there needs to be one, of course, as the stories were funny on their own. My favourite was the second - Raymond makes boot soup in Charlie and Emily’s apartment. After discussing it at book club I realised that I liked them less than I thought I did, as points were raised about the characters in each story feeling very similar to each other (unlikable man, musician, involved in an unhappy marriage). I think there was a bit more nuance than this to them but I think it would have been interesting to expand the characters more and make it wilder. Ishiguro is good at writing realistic dialogue - perhaps he should try writing a play?
