The characters in this book were complex but not at all lovable. They were actually infuriating. This book was interesting enough to keep me reading and wanting to know what is happening. The reveal was not at all surprising and a little predictable but I like the way this author writes. Not my favorite of his, but still okay.

I'm so glad that I got the chance to read an ARC of this book from NetGalley @netgalley. .

I didn't really know what I was expecting but it really was a brilliant book. It was a murder mystery/thriller which had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. .

The first half of the book really reminded me of The Girl On The Train which I really enjoyed but I found that the differences were what made this book so good. I never expected the twist that came near the end but thought it was such a clever way to flip the whole story on its head. .

It also has you second guessing each character with all the unreliable narration. The use of mental health problems showed how much help needs to be out there. I really enjoyed Hen and Matthew and thought they shared a weird type of bond that was intriguing. It did seem like fate brought them together and helped Matthew get rid of his 'demons'.

After attending a dinner party at her new neighbors house, Hen is convinced the husband is a murderer. After a history of mental illness/ mania and having wrongly accused someone before, she sets out to prove she is telling the truth this time and that her neighbor IS in fact a murderer. Especially after she witnesses him committing another one.

The majority of the twists left me stunned and excited, wanting more, except for the reveal at the 70% mark which was somewhat deflating, and in my opinion not needed. It's not that it was bad per se, its subtlety impressed me, I didn't see it coming, and it was executed a lot better than another novel I've read with the same twist, but I preferred the direction I thought the book was heading.

All in all, near perfect, mind-bending, spine-tingling thriller

3.5 stars for me. I almost didn’t finish it. The first half really dragged for me, and I found the trope of “unreliable female protagonist, because she’s on medication from one incident many years ago” so over done. However, about halfway through, I became a little more invested in the characters, and found the twist somewhat interesting.

It takes place in the Boston metro west area. If your expecting to recognize any of the locations, I have bad news for you. They are all made up, with a bit of reality. Like the Waltham river. Doesn’t exist. Waltham is on the Charles river though...But they take route 2 through Concord.... I prefer my places to be real, not a mess of real and made up.
