I had seen this book advertised without really knowing what it was about, so when I spotted it in the library I thought I'd give it a try. When I read the blurb I sort of doubted whether I wanted to read it, thinking that it'd be aimed at children.
The book deals with Auggie Pullman starting mainstream school with a severe facial deformity, focusing on Auggie and his friends and family who narrate their sides of his story.
In retrospect I can't say that anything incredible or exciting happens and yet every time I put it down I wanted to pick it up again, there was definitely something compelling about it.

The only negative thing that I can say - and this is really what kept it at a three star rating - is that there were characters who could have been used as narrators who would have been harder hitting than some that were actually used. Justin and Miranda added absolutely nothing to the story plotwise or with their emotions/opinions. Yet there was absolutely no input from Auggie's parents.
How did Auggie's Dad react to his wife putting Auggie in school? Did Auggie's mum purposely choose Auggie over Via? How did Nate react to this? How did Isobel really deal with Auggie's school trip?
There was a lot of emotion that wasn't tapped into, which could have made this book a bit more stand out for me.

This book is totally AWESOME. It should be read not just by children but also the adults. This book tells a lot of lessons. Especially in this judgmental world where majority judges the physical appearance of a person. This book made me laugh and cry but most of all this book made me realize so much about some things that sometimes I take for granted.

Worth reading :)

This book was simply amazing. I went into quite apprehensively because I thought a story about a 10 year old deformed child would be cliche' and written badly however that's the exact opposite of what I found. It was written marvelously, a perfect depiction of a 10-year-old child. Not only 10 but, from what I remember, three other 14-year-olds and another 10 year old girl? I may be wrong on that one.
This was definitely a character-driven book, which I enjoyed, I found a deep level of understanding for most of them which is rare in the context of this book. I was also quite emotionally attached to August and his family, I found myself crying on two occasions: when Daisy died and in the end, when everyone started applauding for August.
One thing that I disliked was when the book was written from Justin's point of view, there was a lack of punctuation and grammar - that really irked me but I managed to get past it.

Overall, this book definitely deserves the five stars and the hype it was given. It's absolutely beautiful.

"Reading this book at 21 made me realize how much a family can be worth and how much the simplest things are worth. It made me think back to my school days and my experience of going to a new school multiple times. I wish I had read it in my teenage years or earlier,it would have changed my perspective on life, the way I see myself, and, more importantly, how I treat and appreciate my parents. It was a great experience reading this book. I enjoyed every moment and learned deeply from it,and you will never get bored reading it.
