Reviews with content warning for Ableism - Wonder

I have always been told this book was good but honestly never really thought it would be, it just always seemed like one of those books that has a character with some type of physical issue and though the story itself is bland everyone cries because oh the poor boy. However, I have finally decided to read it after pushing it back over and over again and I'm so glad I have finally read it because holy cow is it great! I like how even though it is a kids book, it doesn't really hold the reader's hand and also the writing really puts you into the mind of whoever is talking at the moment. Overall, a fantastic read, probably my third favorite this year (that sounds low but I swear it's not!) and was even close to tears at one point - and not because oh the poor boy.

i will say i love this book with my heart when i got bullied as a kid, but on relfection and re-read the fact that auggies pov doesn't really feel like it's him sometimes, and rather the author googled how disabled people deal with mental health and just went off some dotpoints, like some sort of ghost writer in a sense??. they also don't mention auggies conditon IN THE BOOK, which i feel like would be way more impactful because it gives kids that actual example instead of 'mysterious mishapen face condition' this book is not inherently bad, but i really think that the amount of people reading it and taking the message at face value with no questioning into the ethics of how society hates the word 'disabled' and why ableds tend to treat disableds as spectacle is very much possible to explore well enough in childrens literature. children are more intelligent than people give them credit for. but i guess using disabled people as an example, rather than them being thier own people, is one of the biggger problems in this book which is probably made obvious by the other reviews.
