The first three quarters of the book were really outstanding.  The pacing slipped a bit towards the end and the plot got a bit swimmy.

The character of Auggie comes right off the page on page one...he is just so compelling and so real.

My son was distracted by the changing POVs through the book....it was Auggie we wanted to hear and know and witness.

It worked, to some extent, to go-between the characters, but I did wonder if that was part of the fracturing of attention at the end...or a need for a long resolution, when really as readers we wanted the emotional truth of the first 75% of the book.

It is possible to teach empathy to a child through this book, it is so powerful.
That said, I've read it at a slightly later age in life. It would've struck nearer had I read it in middle school because even if I've never been bullied, I could still relate to that being-left-out-but-trying-to-get-into-the-cool-group feeling. Just the best depiction of school life. Such a heart-nestling storyyy!!
