One of my favorite Earth books I’ve read this year. The book is monthly letters written between Room 5 and Earth. Beautifully engaging illustrations, strong rhymes and manageable ideas make this a strong book.

Written in letters from the students in Room 5 to the Earth, this hopeful picture book outlines many small actions kids can take to help save our environment. This is helpful reading for Earth Day storytimes or classroom lessons. Pair it with One Earth by Eileen Spinelli or Thank You, Earth by April Pulley Sayre.

Picture book. A group of children start writing letters to Earth and become pen pals. They ask how to help, and Earth tells them to turn off the lights. Soon they are limiting plastic use, regifting presents, helping the school cafeteria compost, and growing a garden. The letters are a nice way to communicate a big topic without seeming too didactic. It does seem strange that there is no adult present in the classroom or the after-school club, but I don't know that kids would notice. Children are of various skin tones and one has leg braces. Pictures are muted but are appropriately earthy. Back matter includes a letter from the author and discusses the four Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle, and RENEW which I don't usually hear included).
