A quirky story of Billy Pilgrim who was an American prisoner of war during the bombing and destruction of Dresden resulting in a massacre of civilians. Billy believes himself to have been captured by aliens at some point in his life, who had a differing view of life and death from the viewpoint Billy had been brought up with. This helps him to come to terms with death which, in its various forms, surrounds us all but which is greatly increased in war. Nonetheless the theme of the story is undoubtedly about the futility of war and the loss of so many people which it brings about.
