my first book of 2022 and what a way to start the new year with a bang! i've said it once and i'll say it again, fans of fantasy romance need to pick up stacey marie brown's books. they are all so so good and deserve much more attention and praise than they get. i love all of SMB's heroines, but kennedy was so different from the others and it was really refreshing reading about an average girl with confidence issues turning into the queen that she's always been destined to be. i continue to be amazed by SMB's ability to make me fall in love with the some of the most morally grey heroes i've encountered and i'm very pleased with how kennedy and lorcan's story came to a close. i'm very excited to read about lars' story next.

LOVED IT! The Kennedy/Lorcan love story is SO GOOD and SO HOT. Phew! Really enjoyed learning more about the Druids in SMB's fae world. It was very satisfying to read Kennedy come into her own with this book. Her two "Raven" things she decided to make permanent once returning to be her Queen role perfectly represented her character's journey! Really enjoyed this one Stacey except for Wizard's subplot.... :(

So, I really hated Kennedy in the last book. And honestly? I still don't like her. I just can't help but question her decisions and her actions....which are rarely smart or thought out. As for Lorcan, I really don't have too strong of an opinion either way. I mean, I like him, but I hate how he is so back and forth about everything. It was annoying. Then you have these two as a couple. Obviously I am a minority here because I hate these two together. Their relationship makes zero sense to me and is completely unbelievable. They have nothing in common and spend all their time fighting or lusting for each other. It made me want to bash their heads in.
As we know, Kennedy's reign is on shaky ground. After an attack that almost killed her and Lars, it was decided that she would go undercover and try to infiltrate this group. Because what better place for the queen to be when obviously someone is trying to kill her? As if the way she went about it wasn't eye roll inducing enough, afterwards she continues to act as if she has this whole new badass persona inside her. She doesn't. And it was stupid. This whole time she uses Lorcan as sort of a bodyguard while trying to play it off as if he is under her control thru her magic. She somehow actually manages to make it into this group. It's because of them though that we learn of her "dark power" and why she sometimes delights in doing bad things. Soon enough though, she fails a test given by this group and now finds herself and Lorcan captured by them. The twist ending was pretty cliche, but the fight at the end was pretty good. When Lars shows up at the end it would have been so much better if I didn't know what was coming next with his book. I love that unseelie king and I am not happy with who he ends up with.

Kennedy matures! Kennedy is really falling into her new role here, and is becoming more in touch with who she really is.

While Kennedy is maturing, and her relationship with Lorcan is healing, we are also treated to a dangerous secret mission across the globe. We also meet / are reunited from more characters from the ๐๐ข๐ณ๐ฌ๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ด๐ด series. And thereโs a pretty epic battle to finish things off.
Things have been developing since the ๐๐ข๐ณ๐ฌ๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ด๐ด series, through the ๐๐ฐ๐ญ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ค๐ต๐ฐ๐ณ ๐๐ฆ๐ณ๐ช๐ฆ๐ด, and now into the ๐๐ช๐จ๐ฉ๐ต๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ด๐ด saga seem to finally be coming to a head. Onto the next!

Kennedy and Lorcan finally get over themselves! But not for a bit. Kennedy is runningn the Kingdom and she gave Torin back his position of First Knight. I kinda knew he would fall for Kennedy, he seems to fall for anyone who has authority over him. Unfortunately for him, Kennedy doesn't feel the same. She does find a sect of Druids and manages to infiltrate. What's interesting is she finds out the leader is her sister. And another thing is that they both have a natural affinity for Dark Magic, which goes against the natural state of Druids. They are creatures of light, normally. There's a twist in this book that I definitely didn't see coming! I won't spoil it for those who haven't read it yet.
