I really loved this book - it gave me some insight into myself and also let me look into Emezi’s world, an entity I’ve admired for a long time :) I did find some parts hard to follow but overall very much enjoyed it :)

I've read 30 books this year. This was one of the two that made me feel the most. I felt seen, I've felt their presence and spirit, and I'm just in awe of their writing and self-consciousness. It's about death and wanting to die, about making decisions for yourself and believing they will come to life before you even made them. It's about trusting the wrong person and setting boundaries.
I can't wait to have all their books in my home.

Read for a class.

Each and every one of the stories in this memoir felt like a sucker punch to the face in the best possible way. Emezi is an incredibly captivating storyteller; tracking the increasingly complex relationships that tied the recipients of the letters to the narrator was one of my favorite parts of the reading experience! The discussion about a greater spirit that transcends the human binary (ogbanje) was just fascinating.

That being said, it falls short of a perfect rating due to the nature of the letters. Revealing the letters as a purely individual endeavor not meant for the eyes of the subjects felt like a bit of a cop-out. It slightly tainted the bite of all of the words exchanged.

But all in all, it's fantastic! I'm excited to read the rest of the memoirs assigned in my class :)

This book quite literally saved my life. Without it, I may never have started T or lived long enough to give it a chance. Emezi is an unparalled writer, the queer literary god of our generation. Their words, syntax, and thoughts pieced together from broken pieces of their shattered soul & masks are mirrors to so many of our experiences.

Though I'm different from Emezi in many ways, I found so much of this memoir relateable in ways and for things that I'd never found the words, or the courage, to voice. I've read other books of this author's and really liked them but this was singular experience.

I'm already re-reading to highlight and annotate the sections that stuck out to me the first time and to seek out the hidden gems I'm sure I missed. This book is phenomenal in absolutely every way. I cannot recommend it enough!
