Completely and utterly blown away by this. My first Emezi and most certainly not the last.

This was a memoir full of so much emotion. A roller coaster of heartbreak for their own heartbreak, struggles with the world, and how terrible people have treated them. Why do so many people with a sun energy have to deal with people who bring them down.

I loved being able to listen to Emezi read this. I felt like I was in an author talk, perhaps in a small dark room intensely focused on their reading. I know I’m going to need a physical copy to reread, as there are many many things to take away from this. But for my first read, I think the biggest thing I took away way to believe in yourself 100%. Think and speak what you want into this world. Know that it’ll happen and it’s happening. Be the sun and say your words of truth so that they seep into your being and into reality.

Singular. Bold. Self aware. Unapologetic.

Formatted as letters to friends of the author. We witness Akwaeke's deeply personal writing over the expanse of several life altering events. Emezi's writing holds no comparisons.

I'm now more than ever excited to read Freshwater.

Do not read without checking warnings.

These letters are personal, philosophical, poetic, and rich with emotion. So many of their lines moved me in ways I wasn't prepared for. This isn't a book I'll soon forget.

Written as a series of letters to friends (and really to themself) Akwaeke Emezi's memoir gives a deep and vulnerable look into their mind and unique point of view. I listened to the audiobook, but was very glad I own a copy so I could highlight quotes to come back to. While covering some difficult topics, Emezi's gorgeous writing really shines through and even though as a memoir it centers on their experience, I found many relatable parts focused on the struggle of living in our current harsh world.

Reread July 2024: Even better on a reread - and so much more stood out to me now that I've read all of their books, including Little Rot

Agonizingly relatable. Unapologetic. Their prose is SO good and illuminates so much of my own life and brain.

Chills the whole way through. Grateful that I'm here at the same time they are publishing books.

Beautiful. Deeply poetic, deeply vulnerable, and deeply illuminating.

Having already read most of Emezi's work, this memoir gave me a lot of clarity around the concepts explored in their books (specifically Freshwater).
