Waiting for Dreadwolf is harder than it's ever been with this book. Thinking of reviews for short story anthologies are challenging for me, since judging it as a whole is difficult when different writers are collaborating over it, but I overall love this book, and love the lore that Dragon Age has always been known for. Some of them were stellar, some of them were lackluster; but here are a few of my favourites:
- 'Callback,' Lukas Kristjanson: Tragic, and made me revisit Inquisition and really pay attention to Skyhold.
The little Solas cameo in it got me and got me good. A piece full of remorse, with a fun D&D cast. - 'The Wigmaker Job,' Courtney Woods: I love Lucanis!
- 'Eight Little Talons,' Courtney Woods: By far the best character cast, and I've always loved the Crows. This just made me love them more. And Teia and Viago are an excellent couple.
- 'The Dread Wolf Take You,' Patrick Weekes: The reason I even read this.
Each character's voice at that table was so unique, and the story so fun and convoluted and such a good primer for the fourth game. That reveal with Solas was expected but absolutely excellent. In all, groundbreaking.

Really enjoyed most of the stories. A LOT happens in these stories, so I highly recommend as a pre-rec for getting the full context of the next game. Also, it was (mostly) a good time. There was only one story I had to skim because I just did not vibe with the character and writing style, but I'd sat that's an excellent hit rate for such a chunky collection. I will say I was consistently frustrated by two things:
1. The Dragon Age team won't stop hiding Major Story Events in books. Inquisition didn't reeeaally detail the Major Pieces of Information that they hid in books that Absolutely would impact the way players approach key situations. There are pros and cons to this, butthey've now started, what, three wars offscreen? It's getting a little ridiculous, so I hope the next game spends more time on context than inquisition did.
2. The dragon age series consistently attempts to tackle social issues like racism and systemic abuse etc etc and it is usually pretty clear that the writers are not particularly well informed on these issues. I remember it most in the first short story, where it was very very clear the writer had neither experienced racism nor done any real investigation into how it feels and how POC interact with racists who are hateful on main. It was uncomfortable to read.
As with other dragon age titles, it's a bit problematic, but also a very good genre-hopping time. There's a lot of horror in this one, and a lot of set pieces and characters that make me even more excited to see what they do with the next game =]

This book is a fantastic collection of short stories from the writers of Dragon Age, set within the world of Thedas. Out of all the stories in this book there were only two I found to be dry and that was just due to personal pet peeves with writers quirks (still excellent authors, though!). It's a fantastic mix of genres all within one book -- my favourites being 'The Wigmaker Job', 'Callback', 'May the Dread Wolf Take You', and 'Eight Little Talons' for a fantastic play on the murder-in-a-mansion trope topped with a satisfying parlour scene. Great read :)
