A difficult book to get through, certainly, and to each their own reasons. I like the premise and somewhat the execution. But the translation possibly made reading this in English flat and a bit droning at times. What a strange book.
Points off for the (still) timidity. So close—so close to make bolder statements on your parallel to consumerism! Ah.

Beautiful prose for such a disturbing story. The ending gets a lot of hate, but I think it was perfectly suited to the characters - a setting like this does not create a happy ending. In a way, there was no chance at a happy ending from the very beginning. Dark, intimate, sick and twisted, this is a book that will make you stop and consider what it means to be human.

Honestly it was a beautiful read, but so incredibly dark. I'm already depressed by humanity as a whole, and this book was making it worse. The story is incredible, the writing is top notch, and the story itself is worth telling, but my brain isn't in a good place to process it right now. Maybe someday, but not right now.

I thought the cannibalism was going to be the worst part. It was not.

Fucked up in the best sense of the phrase with characters who make your skin crawl the entire way

A real disappointment. SA used for shock value, gratuitous horror that very quickly lost any emotional impact. I was very surprised that the author is a woman because all the female characters are only characterised by being sexual in a very dehumanising way -- which may have been the point of the book, but it felt demeaning rather than furthering the author's message. In other sections of the novel, the book hits the reader over the head repeatedly with its meaning. Phrases were repeated over and over, and the writing style was very dry. This may have been the translation, but with the plot being both boring and problematic, I still feel it's fair to give this book a low rating.
