took me a while to get into Bryan Washington's staccato, masculine style of writing. There is a crudeness to his writing that unfolds blindingly into tender moments. The pauses scattered in the rapid, bare-bones descriptions. This is a story about perspective, parents, and grief. And a lot about the differences in what people choose to communicate, choose not to communicate, and what people can't communicate even if they want to or try to.

"The point is that this is how you came to be, she says. One thing happened, and then another thing happened. We didn't think about whether it would work or not. We just did it." It's hard for me to properly summarize this book. Broadly, it's about a POC queer relationship but it's more specifically about loss, family, expectations, choices, the things said, and the things held back.
