My least favorite 😒
This was more “These Fleeting Shadows” and less “Rules For Vanishing”, “Our Last Echoes”, or “I Am Still Alive”. I can’t tell if the books are progressively getting worse or if I’m just crazy 🤷‍♀️

A poignant meditation on the difference between love (for yourself and others) versus possession and abuse, this book surprised me in how it created an atmospheric gothic Dark Academia story while also punching in some bittersweet truths that will last long after finishing the book. Also, shoutout to the marvellous representation of the strength of female friendship.

Absolutely broke my heart. Five stars. Be prepared for lots of introspection about domestic violence.

This book's ending was... a lot. Out of all possible outcomes, I truly didn't expect *that*, even if all the other twists were fairly predictable.

It was a quick, atmospheric read with a great setting and a genuinely creepy monster. Everything about that river is nightmare fuel. The characters were okay? I didn't fall in love with them, but they weren’t annoying either.

Despite liking the book, I'm still not sure about that ending, after the confrontation by the river the book just felt... rushed. None of the characters got endings that satifisfied me, Grace and Maeve specially.
I think I would have preferred Eden and Grace staying together at the bottom of the river, tragic as it would have been.

i happily read it, despite all of my notes starting with a variation on "but then why--"
i didn't have it all figured out from the beginning like i thought i did but it was still fairly predictable, and i think most readers will figure out the big "reveal." i also didn't really buy into the romance. just felt like it moved too fast to be authentic (even taking into account their being teenagers). however, i did quite like the characters, eden felt like a well defined protagonist, and i was invested in her relationships with her friends. i wasn't really confident of the author's ability to tie all of the emotional threads together but it was actually done well and thoroughly. mostly i was really excited to be able to read a ghost story and still sleep at night. i briefly dnf'd when the ghost shenanigans kicked up a notch, because they always make me have to sleep with the lights on for like a month, but then i realized i am way too exhausted always to have any trouble sleeping, so I picked it back up. turns out there's finally a use for parental exhaustion!!
