DNF at 20%. Too many stupid characters doing stupid things for plot-reason.

The writing was better than I expected but it all read more like the pilot episode for a TV show- all rather simple setup and character introductions. It just doesn't work as a novel. To be fair, it probably isn't intended to be read as a standalone but for all the mysteries and various supporting characters, I was left with no desire to read any further.

I would say that Linsey's style of writing is a lot of tell vs a lot of show. She has a habit of having very direct dialogue that it feels difficult to really show a character through their dialogue. She just has a very matter of fact way of writing that her characters did this and now they're doing that, but it's just overall very bland. The premise is incredibly interesting but her writing style just doesn't hook me or keep me engaged because it's so much, she did this and he did that. Her way of incorporating her other characters into the story was awkward as well and felt forced. I saw no point to her friends and I saw no benefit to seeing them there. Apparently they're all best friends, but I could hardly tell because of the style of writing (very to the point) and their interactions were very limited. When our female MC reveals her big secret, her friends just shrug and say ok, cool. It didn't feel real. I love the premises that Linsey comes out with, but I'm just not a fan of how she writes.

It was a fun read. The premises of the story is intriguing, but I wasn't a fan of the writing style and I wish the characters were better fleshed out.
