This is more along the lines of what I was looking for when reading Memory Called Empire, but I still found the pacing a bit uneven, though the mystery and world of the novel gripped me. The last one third or so was hard to put down and I'm excited for the next book.

God, I love it when all the strings of a mystery are actually resolved and satisfyingly tied off!

Wasn’t sure what to expect with this, as with the Foundryside series: Is it fantasy, is it sci-fi, is it action/thriller? Whatever it is, a very solid, exciting opening to a series. Lighter on character development than I might prefer, but the worldbuilding is magnificent! (Both of which I’m coming to expect from Robert Jackson Bennett.) Good balance of kind of a noir mystery vibe + exciting, detailed action sequences that actually advance the plot.

Looking forward to starting the next one, though what I really want is more of Sigrud’s story!

This book was an interesting blend of Science fiction, Mystery and Fantasy.
In a world where divinities can change and create realities as they please, there are two clashing states: The continent, which was once the seat of power- and Saypur who is now in charge.
Shara Thivani is sent to the City of Bulikov in order to investigate a possible homicide. But in the city of Bulikov nothing is at is seems to be- the city itself, the people or Shara herself!
I highly recommend this book. It's plot, twists and pace are very interesting for the most part. For fans of emerging industrial style era, where technology and religion don't always see eye in eye.
