VICTIM WITHOUT A FACE was one of those books where you know you are going to love it as soon as you start it, and you also know that you don’t want to rush it and miss anything. So this one took me over 3 months to read, because I was stretching it out and making it last waaaay longer than it should have done. I was savouring the fantastic writing, the build-up of each twist and the characterisations that made this one of my favourite reads of the year so far.
Fabian Risk has just moved to a new town, in fact it is his old town – where he went to school and grew up. He has moved back with his family after accepting a job offer from the local police force. When he arrives, he is meant to be on vacation for a couple of weeks before officially starting his duties, but then a body turns up and he is dragged into a case which has personal ramifications he would never have imagined. Someone from his old class has been murdered and a class picture has been found by the body, insinuating that there will be more deaths.
I LOVED this. It was so exciting, so deep and detailed. My copy was about 560 pages long and I don’t think any of those pages could have been left out. There was so much information in this book, and we needed every bit of it. The case was complex, the characters were many and the crimes were brutal. I loved how Ahnhem had us questioning everyone that was mentioned and I didn’t guess half of the twists before they came.
The only thing I wish had happened was if a bit of the case was tied up at the end. But instead it was left forgotten about... I believe this may be intentional and a precursor to a sequel, but if it isn’t then I will be a bit disappointed – because I’ve pegged the bad guy already! :)
I can’t wait to read the next in the series, and I know I will want to make it last just like I did with this one. I can’t say it’s one you will devour in one sitting, because it’s massive and I don’t think you’d get the enjoyment from it that I did over a longer period. But it is definitely 5* from me.
Recommended for fans of police procedurals, gruesome murders, very very deranged killers and a detailed character driven plot.

God men grusom.

Moderate: Suicide and Abandonment
Minor: Medical trauma and Abortion
It's a serial murder who tortures their victims in several different ways. The torture is described in increasingly gory detail as the book progresses.pandaspirit's review against another edition
