3 stars.

Pretty solid issue. I was excited to see Kate! I love their friendship so I was really interesting in seeing how they would work together.

I don't quite know what it is but something about this narrative is kind of hit or miss for me. It's not bad - it's just not my cup of tea. However, I think Kate and America are in character and I will be reading the conclusion. It sucks that America just can't settle with someone who's not awful.

Also, I hope they switch back the artist from the last issues. This art was not working for me.

The Best Of: America #5

1. America sitting in front of a mirror, remembering her moms and trying to figure out what their legacy is. It has a very Mirror of Erised vibe to it, and I love it.

2. AMERICA REUNITES WITH BESTIE KATE BISHOP FOR SPRING BREAK! I am so pleased by this I cannot even form words to talk about it.

3. This great description of America and Kate’s friendship: “There are those connections that remain constant no matter what dimension you’re in. When everything is swirling with danger and chaos, be brave together. Slay monsters, the patriarchy, and extra-large pizzas.”

4. Kate helping America with both her superhero problems and her love life problems because superheroes can multitask. Get yourselves a bestie like Kate, everyone.

5. “Sometimes the only thing to do is hit the road with your best one.” AMERICA AND KATE ROAD TRIP!!! I love these two so much. Do people ship them? Because I kinda of ship them. Either way, what a duo!

6. Kate being the type of friend who has to selfie every thing she does. I feel you, Kate.

7. The full page of America and Kate going to fight. What legends. I want a poster of that page.

8. Gabby Rivera constantly reminding us she is a brilliant writer with beautiful, lyrical language that somehow feels natural in a comic book: “Talking is so overrated. Reflect. It’s good for you. Remember the first person who’s ever brave enough to honor you with flowers. Do you still hold space for them in your heart? It’s okay if the answer is yes.”

9. The juxtaposition of America having a romantic moment with an old flame while Kate starts to unravel the mystery. Now that’s some good writing.

10. “Run. In the moment when your best one is down, you run. Run with your bravery. Run with everything you’ve got. It’s your job to get to them before they’re gone forever.”

I usually don't review separate issues, but I really loved this one. While I enjoyed the first issue and definitely love America as a protagonist, the writing after the first issue hasn't been that great. The pace was way off and it was honestly kind of a mess. I had no idea what was happening and was very confused.

The writing in this issue is so much better - the pace is just right so it's nice to read which the previous ones haven't been. The relationship between America and Kate is a lot of fun to watch/read and I can't wait to see what happens next.
