Man, I was really hoping this book would be the end of Jaimy.

(Oh, wait, you're not supposed to say that about the love interest, are you?)

The books remain campy as ever; predictable but action-packed. My lack of care for Jaimy is not new -- he was never fleshed out enough for me to understand what the big deal was about him. (But then, Katy Deers is more my type anyway.) By this point I'm royally sick of his non-presence and conviction that Jacky is a delicate delicate flower who must be stowed away safely for protection -- and, granted, it wouldn't hurt Jacky to lie low for a little while (and I guess it's supposed to be sweet that he just wants to provide for her and have a nice little nuclear family?), but -- but one of Jacky's charms is that she's so unquashably feisty and self-reliant.

Mostly. It's harder to get behind Jacky the Con Woman, which is essentially what she is in this book, than it is to get behind Jacky the Sailor. There's a lot going on in this book, and I love the amount of action, but I'm hoping that in the next few books Jacky does have to stand entirely on her own two feet (i.e., without a gaggle of adoring minions behind her) and that, well, Jaimy runs off with somebody and
Spoilerit sticks this time. Before I realised the age difference, I was pulling for him to get Clementine pregnant, marry her out of a sense of honor -- or love -- and Never Be Heard From Again
.

But yes, I'm looking forward to reading the next installment.

If I have to have a least favorite of the series, I think this might be it. The character of Mike Fink drove me nuts! But otherwise, it was an enjoyable listen.

Wow, this one was considerably more risque than the rest. I'd be hesitant to let a 14-year-old read it... unless that 14-year-old was me ^_^

Hurry up, Listen & Live Audio, and release the audiobook already!!!

Speedy summary: In the 5th book of the series, it is 1806 and Jacky gets into shenanigans while going down the Mississippi river. Thoughts: This will be my third read though of this series. I love it and had to share it with my husband (whose reading life is primarily driven by me). I have read the first 5 of 12 out loud to him and will be starting 6 soon! Of the books, I would say this one is both the longest and is slower than the others in the series. There isn't one big, main adventure, but a series of smaller dramas along the journey, as should be expected of a river trip. As always, Jacky is a lovable troublemaker of the finest caliber. Highly recommended for fans of historical fiction!

A strong 3.5.

Starts off with a bang before really sinking to a slog in the middle - but thankfully picks back up in the back half. This one's a lot darker than previous books, and more directly addresses issues of race that were skirted around in the previous book. A few of the plot points were pretty heavily telegraphed as well which made the sagging parts feel all the more dreary. Every part with Mike Fink had me wanting to fast forward.

Not to worry though, the good parts of this are still top-tier and Jacky is in fine shape throughout. However, I much prefer Jacky when she's getting tangled up in military affairs to entrepreneur Jacky (especially in this one when she literally sells snake oil). When this book steers towards that side of the series, I loved it; when it veers into other territory, I found I had to force myself to boot up the audiobook each time. The audio of course remains terrific; if you're reading this series you owe it to yourself to check out at least one on audio. This would be a good one to choose as there's a lot of great songs.

Some great new characters in this book as well - I hope we see some of them again in future books. It'll be a little while before I pick up book 6, but I'll be back.

Eh. This was where I started to lose interest in the Series because of how complicated the character became. She was too many things.

I think this is the first in the series that I hadn't read when I was younger. I still love the cast of characters, especially Jacky. Some of the plot in this is really fun and some is annoying (Meyer also did too good a job making Fink an annoying character). It's a fun addition to the series, though I am starting to wonder how Meyer is going to keep it going for so many more books.

This one felt more ridiculous than usual, but somehow I'm still hooked on listening to the series.
