I knew it was gothic but I was not expecting how gothic it was actually going to get, it read like an European classic, like a Frankenstein, there were tombs and shadows of ghosts, both dead and alive. I was hooked into the mystery of who Julian was and who would he become. I read it in English but I speak Spanish and I could feel the flair of Spanish language through the translation! The translator did an incredible job getting the Spanish apodos and refranes come through, even in English! Being from Latin America,  I had no interest in visiting Spain but the way Barcelona is written into this book makes me curious for its shadowy corners and windy winters. Wow, I’m really impressed

Absolut sexistisch!
Jede Frau wird sexualisiert und alle paar Seiten kommt eine neue frauenfeindliche Aussage.
Die Schreibweise und Handlung hat mir eigentlich gut gefallen. Nach 200 Seiten musste ich abbrechen, weil ich die sexistischen Aussagen nicht mehr ertragen konnte.
Von diesem Autor werde ich nie wieder etwas lesen.

A good one to go into without really knowing much about the plot, it's rewarding to just let it unfold as you read. I absolutely love Ruiz Zafón's writing, the book is a joy to read.

I wanted to like this more than I actually did. There are some wonderful small observations throughout, but I didn't find most of the characters or the actual plot to pull me in as much as they wanted to.

Although I loved the literary mystery and setting,  the ubiquitous misogyny and violence is hard to handle. Women are not treated well in this book…

what started as an intriguing mystery novel soon gripped me completely with its characters and setting and writing. I loved every moment of it, even the parts I didn't like.
