What a delicious novel. Zafón is a thoughtful, lyrical author and this is a masterclass in first-person narrative.

This is one of those books that you finish and you want to immediately read again.

Maybe it was because I had to read it in a hurry but I felt like the last third of this book, while interesting because it revealed all the mysteries, could have been summed up quicker and not repeated EVERYONE's story & connection to Julian.

If every book read like this for me, I would seriously find a job that I could hide behind a counter and read all day....This book nourished my soul. It was perhaps the most beautifully written book I have ever encountered. It read like pure poetry that seemed to be written especially for me. A lover's gentle caress that was so intimate that you know it was for meant for you alone. So deeply felt that it must have been written in the stars long before I even existed. This is a book that I have enjoyed so much that I am hesitant to read the second book in the series. If I were 10 years younger, or not so jaded, i would not hesitate to pick up book two....but life has taught me well...I know that oftentimes what we become enamored with often fails us in the end...perhaps is really is better to remember a perfect moment in time instead of trying to pursue it and have reality slam you in the face....yep....I know....I know....but this book ended perfectly for me....so many could be stand alone books are ruined with authors trying to "do the right" thing...I couldn't bear it if this perfection were ruined...sigh.....

After finishing this book a second time, I can't say enough about the mystery that resides within this novel....It's so easy to fall in love with almost every character in the pages as well....I find it hard to believe that I could love this book any more than I did the first time I found myself lost within it's pages....but it's true...I love it even more now.....such a great story....I'm still afraid to continue on with the story in the other books that follow....

There's something especially compelling about mystery novels that involve books. A book about a book that's never been written allows you to imagine so much about what might have been. I loved picturing the streets of Barcelona, and this was another great book with many kinds of love featured.

I was slow to warm up to this one, but it eventually hooked me in. At first, I didn't care much about the characters and was more interested in the plot. The plot stayed engaging and was satisfyingly complex and layered, but the characters also strengthen throughout the novel, which helped capture more of my interest. By the end, what I got most out of this book was its exploration of how stories and relationships and the past get twisted and deformed, which all comes back to the characters, so it's good that Zafón pulled through

I have to say I knew very little about the Spanish Civil War before reading this book. I'm not sure that I know more about it now, but certainly the feeling of a civil war and the gloom of the post-war and pre-war eras permeates the book. Intrigue told by various players reveal the story in small portions until you finally know how they're all related to one another. Very good book.

Absolutely riveting tale with so many twists and turns! The character development was so well done. I wish I had read it sooner!
