This is an incredible debut fantasy novel.

The story centres around three people:. Adrian, a prince and chosen leader of the army of his people; Lynn, a Sentinel (paladin warrior, chosen by the religious leaders to defend the faith), and Nasha, a hunter and "clansman" from the villages outside the Domain walls.

All three, distinct, separate characters are facing a Madness, turning this story from a standard high fantasy to a high fantasy zombie tale.

Its a well written tale, that drops the reader straight into the story, and the world building is developed as the rake itself unfolds. While it was initially slow to start the pace quickly ramps up.

Im looking forward to Book 2, when all the pieces come together!

~Many thanks to Netgalley for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ~

Unfortunately, 50 pages in this was not making any sense, writing was a bit all over the place and I didn't see this going anywhere I would enjoy.

I'm really impressed with Thiago Abdalla's debut novel. I really loved the characters most of all. The various stories were interesting, with lots of twists and turns and political backstabbing.

My only complaint (and it's a minor one) is the POV shifts. There were 3 POVs that Abdalla rotated through throughout the book. It didn't bother me at all after the halfway point, but I would have prefered to stay with each character longer in the beginning. It felt like it took too a little long to get to know each of them.

Otherwise, this is an intriguing debut with awesome characters. Oh yeah, I almost forgot. It has some pretty badass gryphons too! Can't wait to learn more about these characters and world in Prelude to Ashes!

A really cool concept, but it took me a while to even understand what was going on, and once I did, I just felt bored for most of the story. Might try the next one later down the road.

The religion, political maneuverings and just straight up tension in this book was insane. I enjoyed some POVs more than others and I was confused a few times by certain situations but you can trust the process with this one and I did enjoy this pretty well. Gonna read the next book as soon as I can.

Well, I'm glad I finished it. I wasn't sure I would since I simply could not get in this one! I think there's a strong idea of a story here, but the storytelling needs some tweaking. The first half of the book, I was confused about many things, which made it hard to be motivated to read. There were too many unexplained characters and cities, and aspects of characters (which I see now were intended to be mysterious), that combined were distastefully confusing.
The last quarter of the book was better, and some things became clearer. If only the book was more clear from the start, I would give it more stars.

This story never got off the ground and I had no connections with any of the characters. There were three main characters who seem to have nothing in common. The book kept switching from character to character with each chapter. None of them got enough momentum to let me empathize with. The fight scenes were weak and it took forever for there to be any griffins. I just could not get into this and struggled to finish.

I thought this book was ridiculously good in the genre of fantasy it's remarkable how many writers come along and manage to have fresh and innovative ideas. This book is even more remarkably because it is self published.

Like Daniel T Jackson's Illborn from last year books like this proof that you have nothing to fear from dipping your feet in self published waters.

I think this book is relentless in its action and will keep.most readers turning the page over quickly.

I look forward to ordering the shades of madness.
