I didn't know this was based on an actual serial killer until my mom told me it was when I was telling her about the book.

I was also going to give it three stars but then I remembered how often I went back to the book and how interested I was in the book. So it good five stars.

If you like books about murder read this one.

straightforward and relatively gory for a young adult novel, which was pretty cool. i struggled to connect with Zuretta sometimes and I felt as though I was being told details instead of shown. Some characters felt like they needed more fleshing out and I would have enjoyed deeper interactions between them. i love this time period and i’m glad this story was written - overall, enjoyed reading

I liked the twist on history, but I was not a fan of Holmes’ villain monologue. Like can we not?

The main reason this wasn’t an interesting read is we know who the killer is the entire time. I mean, it’s based on a real historical event. Sooooo it’s not really an interesting mystery when the readers know everything the whole time. There was no element of surprise or intrigue.

A fast paced story revolving around the horrid murders of H. H. Holmes. I wish it went more in to detail about things, but it just seemed to skate around everything. The ending felt rushed (one of the worst serial killers ever and you take him out in a few minutes with a little knife? Felt very unbelievable.) I still thought it was good though.

It's gonna be a DNF, besties. DNF @ page 104 out of 304. I tried! I fell in love with the concept and the cover, and so I tried.

This took literally 100 pages to get where it was wanting to go, but when it got there, I was too fed up and bored to care. Also, it is just so weird to frame this narrative as a murder mystery when anyone who picked this book up because they are interested in true crime (like me) already knows who HH Holmes was and what he did. It felt tedious at best. I think this author would probably do well with thrillers - adult ones, and completely fictionalized ones. However, they need to learn how to give their main character more than one personality trait.

There is also an egregious typo on page 104. If the book is set in 1893, there is no reason why I should be reading "1993" on the page. Editing matters, y'all. I feel like this book wasted 4 days of my life and put me into a reading slump. Ugh.
