There are parts liked and parts I didn’t. I think I would have enjoyed this more if it was longer and involved more than the one night. I think I needed more time to get to know the characters to enjoy it more. Also, I think this is a book that is suppose to make you think and present two perspectives and it did that well and let it up to the reader to discover things on their own, but it did need more of a resolution at the end. It didn’t seem like either girl learned much from the other and I was hoping for them to take something from the event.

Well written, a quick read, about important topics. Loose ends make the book feel more real and unsettling, just like race relations in this country today.

I’m Not Dying With You Tonight by Gilly Segal and Kimberly Jones is a book that I’ll gladly add to my shelf right next to The Hate U Give and I’m Not Your Typical Mexican Daughter. It’s a good addition to YA books that address race relations and the struggle of fitting in. I enjoyed being able to read this story from two completely different perspectives, a black girl and a white girl, and seeing how differently they reacted to the same situation. The book does seem a little rushed but I also think that adds to the stress of the situation so I don’t have any issues with that. I’m not entirely convinced that this book does any favors to teenage girls though because both of them seem to lack a healthy dose of common sense in a very dangerous situation. Overall, I do think this is an interesting book with many possible discussion points with your teenagers.

I listened to the audiobook and it didn’t really strike a chord with me. I didn’t connect with any of the characters and some of things they ran into on the way to get home seemed kind of unbelievable. Like, the street they had to go down was blocked so they had to go down a more dangerous one. And this was their only option. It seemed a little ridiculous to me. While listening to this, I kept thinking back to The Hate U Give because Thomas did such a good job making the reader fear for the characters and even secondary characters and bystanders by the events unfolding in their town. Instead, I was pretty meh about this book.
