I liked this one, but didn't love it.
While I quite enjoyed most characters, it somehow lacked a little bit of depth to make it a personal favourite for me.
The easy prose, well done humour, action and interesting characters still made it a good read, and I don't regret investing the time, it just isn't one that will stick with me overly long.

This took me longer to get through than I expected. Not necessarily because it was bad, but the first few chapters really struggled to engage me. The titular Black Hawks are fun characters, but the protagonist and the other character that get dragged along by them are mostly ineffective and don’t have much agency. Sure, Chel chooses to stay with his sworn lord due to his oath, but not sticking around generally means death, so is hardly a dramatic choice.

3.5 ⭐️’s out of 5.

Nothing new, groundbreaking or genre defining but a good old romp filled with banter, humour, insults and more ‘F-bombs’ than you can shake a shitty stick at.

It’s a shortish book, suitable for when your looking for a good time and a break from something dark or epic.

You are thrown right into the fray and things keep happening around you all the the time from then on. Fun characters, though not really believable. Reading this is like having a table top role playing game session put into writing afterwards with that over the top, not to serious, entertainment.

Bit of a slow start, but the characters (especially Tarfel) kept the story very lively when the plot didn't.
To be fair, read this right after a reading slump of a while, which may have influenced my opinion.

Still, fun read and I'll likely read the sequel too once I can.
