Jack, Mr Revise and the Fables of the retirement home go to war against the Bookburner. Mr Revise gives his inmates back their old powers and the story is saved by a literal deus ex machina.

For some reason the front cover makes Jack look like Christopher Fowler (no idea why)

Oh, and Jack finds out thet not only is he half Fable and half Literal (you would need to read the story to find out what this means), but he has had sex with all 3 of his half-sisters. Strangely enough, they are more disturbed about this than he is, which says it all about this series.

In which Jack continues to be a totally punchable bumface. The Literals started off looking promising, but it's really just a big mess now. Just the crossover to get through now and then hopefully I can carry on with the main series and pretend all this never happened.

Bookburner is at the gates of Golden Boughs, ready to exterminate the "retired" fables. Somehow Jack ends up in charge of the defence of Golden Boughs, and immediately uses it to pick-up women. Luckily, Gary the pathetic fallacy and Revise have some extra tricks up their sleeves. And some really important information about Jack's parentage.

Fun and silly addition to the series.

As I continue to catch up with Jack in order to be able to get back in line with Fables, I can say two things about this arc:

1) This was quick and engaging enough for me to finish in one sitting.

2) This had very little actually happening except to really set up the crossover event in the next arc.

So, all things being equal, it was...okay. I keep hoping that this series hits the high notes that what it spun off from has shown itself capable of, but it always seems to fall flat.

No.

SpoilerI have to start with the very end. WTF Willingham? Either A) you are pulling stuff out of your arse or B) you are one sick dude. At the end of this volume, after hearing Jack go on and on about sleeping with the Page sisters, we discover that he is their half brother. Sorry, incest is not funny. Raven's "atta-boy" didn't help either.

If it weren't for my love of the original series I would have given up on Jack. It is a truly painful read, with a boring plot, repetitive jokes, and completely unlikable characters. Even Gary, who I once found endearing is getting on my last nerve.

Here is the outline for every Jack story: Troubles brewing, Jack sleeps with someone, trouble mounting, Jack talks about sleeping with someone, cue pointless Babe the Blue Ox aside. Jack decides he will fix said trouble, more talking about sex, Jack makes trouble worse, cue pointless Babe the Blue Oz aside. Talking about sex, Jack averts trouble, cue pointless Babe the Blue Ox, sex joke, sex joke, sex joke. See you next time.

It is boring and unfunny. This comic would stand half a chance of being something if the focus was completely on the literal and they ditched Jack altogether. Of course, that won't happen since they made him immortal and his name is in the title. Damn.

More Jack! And this it's the big battle schene in this universe, much like in [b:Fables, Vol. 11: War and Pieces|3392123|Fables, Vol. 11 War and Pieces|Bill Willingham|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1375393981l/3392123._SX50_.jpg|3431993]. Gary (the Pathetic Fallacy) really shines here:

Jack-of-Fables-6-01-Horses

No horses? Use anything close!

Jack-of-Fables-6-02-The-library

IT LIVES!

And of course as comedic relief the entire time as well:

Jack-of-Fables-6-03-How-could-you-forget

It's a bit telling just how strange the Literals are and also
Spoilerquite the twist for Jack to be half Literal
.

Wait. What does that mean for John of Fables? Where'd he go anyways?

First, I'm finally clear on what Mr. Revise and the other library workers are. The Literals are personifications of literary terms. Revise and Bookburner both are against the Fables but in different ways. Bookburner wants to destroy the Fables. Revise only wants to let the wider world forget the Fables so the world won't have magic. Now they are at war with each other.

"If there's one thing that small-pet breeder Pip Wallace has learned over the years, it's that mankind's greatest enemy if the hamster.

The horrifying truth is that their cute and fuzzy exteriors conceal a deep and uncompromising evil.

Over the years, Pip has been able to discern these hateful creatures' malevolent intentions.

Their goal is nothing less than genocide. Even now they are preparing to rise up, throw off the shackles of their habitrails and fun wheels, and gnaw the throats of our children while they sleep."

[Beat.]

"Fortunately, they're just hamsters."

Also, Jack is a dick.
