I absolutely don't need another children's book, but I was sucked in by the title and pictures and the fact that Fluffy looks a lot like my cat Scruffy (RIP). The artwork was wonderful. But the story...
I was okay with the exploding animals, although I wondered what kids would think and if it might upset them. But I was waiting to see where the story went and how Fluffy resolves her situation, and I felt super disappointed and even somewhat disturbed by what happened. I was thinking she'd find some way to live among the other animals safely, and she seemed to really want to be friends with them. But instead she ends up alone on an island where she is sad, until a cute dog comes along. Presumably because they are both cute, they are immune to each other? So they go on living there together, just the two of them.
I don't know. It felt wrong to meālike (1) the other animals aren't cute, and (2) cute animals are different than the other animals somehow, and (3) Fluffy's in some toxic relationship where she has to stay on the island with the dog and can't have other friends ? It just left me with a bad feeling. It seemed like it might leave some harmful lesson in a kid's head.
