Until I hit the last quarter I was planning to give this book three stars. It’s a bit unique in its pacing and the way it shifts perspectives and I found it a bit confusing at first. But I like it. I don’t think I’ll ever reread it, and i don’t recommend it to just anyone. But it’s a collaboration of a apocalyptic future and and artsy introspective novel.
“Survival is insufficient” though, really hit me hard. I’ve been a bit depressed and simultaneously overwhelmed at the prospect of BEING for the next 50+ years. Life has felt like such a burden. But that quote reminded me that just surviving is what we’re trying to do. There’s more to life than living.

It wasn't until about 70% through that the book/plot demanded my attention, though the storyline was always fascinating especially with the current pandemic. But that last quarter really rounded out the story amazingly. Wasn't what I was expecting for sure

I know this book is a big deal right now, but I'm not exactly sure why. It was well written & maybe it's just cause I'm kinda over the whole post-apocalypse dystopian novel deal. I didn't dislike it, but I never got really drawn into this world.

Thirteen months ago I would have considered the collapse of civilization due to a deadly swine flu pandemic inconceivable. Now, not so much. Having been isolated on and off for the last year and seen the empty paper product isles in the grocery stores it’s not much of a stretch to envision the complete breakdown of society had the current flu been more contagious and deadly with a shorter incubation time. So this book hit home in a way it wouldn’t have pre-pandemic. I enjoyed the characters and figuring out how they were connected to Arthur and each other even though, perhaps, especially though the characters themselves were unaware of the connection.

“What reason could there possibly be for something like this?”...“everything happens for a reason… it's not for us to know”
Brimming with some wise and hard-hitting verses, this engaging novel centered around faith with elements of survival strikes differently given our current circumstances.

3.5 Really well written book, with several connected but separate stories told together from different perspectives and time periods. Personally, I dislike apocalyptic stories and settings, so it was difficult to enjoy this book, but it is really well written and the story is solid.
