Following a young sacrificial priestess of an underground labyrinth and her life-changing encounter with a thief, I liked this second book in the Earthsea series more than the first and am very curious how the next book will put the first two into perspective somehow.

I'd never read Ursula K. Le Guin before, and this was recommended and lent to me by a big fan of hers. Although this is second book in a series, this can definitely stand on its own. A quick and fun fantasy read that was giving abolitionist vibes for sure. I have also been in a toxic work situation for a while, so Tenar's struggle towards freedom and letting go of the thing that is trapping and killing her was highly relatable. Honestly highly relatable to anyone feeling the weight of late stage capitalism.

LeGuin’s writing style is still a delight, but the pacing felt really unbalanced: the beginning was slow and exposition-heavy, and then a bunch of things happened and the book ended at a weird point that left the heroine suspended between two plot arcs. Will definitely continue with the series, though, because I like the setting very much.

As spellbinding and progressive as its prequel. As classic as A Wizard of Earthsea is, The Tombs of Atuan affected me more, focusing on a young girl grappling with a paradigm shift and the terror of choosing freedom after a life of indoctrination into a religious cult . Le Guin is a masterful worldbuilder and storyteller; her writing is both concise and emotionally resonant. She crams so much depth into such a short book, that it feels like sorcery. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I enjoyed this one until Ged shows up. Then he’s such a patronizing asshat I almost threw the book across the room several times. “Oh, Tenar, you’re free now—as long as you go exactly where I take you and do exactly what I say!” He treats Tenar as much like a treasure as he does the Ring, and it’s super gross.
