This book consisted of pages and pages of a character explaining the history of this fantasy/alternate version of Venice rather than allowing us to experience those pages as part of the story.
There were moments where this story had potential, which is why it didn't get 1-star only, but that potential was never seen, unfortunately.

The Water Mirror is set in an alaternate Venice of the late 1800 filled with magic, mermaids, and an evil Egyptian empire. Merle is an orphan and is apprenticed to a magic mirror maker. When she and Serafin - the magic weaver's apprentice - overhear a plot to allow the Egyptians to conquer Venice, they find themselves in the midst of danger.[return][return]A well told story, especially with the audio narrator. It was quite different from other plots and I look forward to the next book. My only complaint is that the story ends on a cliff hanger and should have gone on for a bit more.

I really liked this book, it had world building that was similar to Harry Potter. But unlike Harry Potter, which was never too short and always finished out the year, this book had no ending. With lots of series there is a full story arc for each book and a larger arc for the series. Not the case for this one, there was no resolution at all.
