Love this book so much! Despite being a Victorian Gothic tale of predatory lesbian sexuality, the relationship between Laura and Carmilla is so tender and loving.
Not sure I loved this edition, though. The editor's introduction using a fake framing narrative is clever, but doesn't really add much to the story. It doesn't help that most don't pick up that it IS fake and just end up spreading misinformation (I'm sorry to the Barnes and Noble cashier who excitedly told me, "Did you know this was based on two real women?!" No, no it was not). I also wasn't wild about the footnotes. I would have loved actual historical and geographical context instead of limp mood-setting lines like, "Imagine, reader: a river of blood" or flash fiction about how the General is actually gay. Or I would have taken those things IN ADDITION to actual footnotes. The cover and illustrations of this edition are gorgeous but I think I'm going to pick up another edition to be my permanent copy.
