A really fun, delicious, yumyum, OMG chocolate, picture book! Perfect for Easter!
I was looking around for some fun books to read during Easter + I wanted to add a new one to my picture book collection when I came across this one! It is apparently a whole series so I am looking forward to getting the other books during other times (like the Christmas one during Christmas).
In this one we meet a princess named Oola who is very eager about Easter! The Easter Bunny has done a magnificent job.. but he hadn’t counted on Oscar I think. I had such a laugh, though I also felt a tad sad, at seeing what was happening on each picture and seeing what was eaten. Because Oscar is an empty void. He eats anything and everything and it was great fun reading the story and then checking out the wonderful illustrations on what had happened and what the characters were doing. What was eaten (including a gingerbread house, yum). Seeing Oscar get more and more chocolately.
I was so sad for the characters, they were so looking forward to this event. But I was happy when they didn’t give up! Decided on making their own Easter. Deciding to work together and make something fun of it again! I loved that they did that and I was just rooting and cheering for them. Though haha, maybe not let the pirates bury the booty next time because without Oscar…. XD
I thought it was silly that Oola didn’t think about Oscar and didn’t give him at least a bit of a scolding for doing what he did. I mean this is how you enable him to just keep on eating! Then again.. I do wonder if he would ever stop. But at least he would know he hurt his friend (and the others in the book), maybe he would at least see it a bit?
The illustrations are wonderful! I really like the style. Love how the characters were drawn, Oola was so adorable. I will have to see what more Nikki Dyson has done because I want more~
All in all, a fun book about an unstoppable unicorn with a void as belly and about Easter and working together! Very cute! Made me laugh!

Little details are hidden throughout the book, from cover to cover, which add to the fun. A sparkly glittery cover adds to the stereotype, which is promptly flipped inside.
Author, Lou Carter, was a primary school teacher before turning her hand to writing picture books. She is the author of Pirate Stew, as well as the award-winning There Is No Dragon In This Story.
Her career in teaching is evident - Oscar is a wonderful book to read aloud. She knows exactly how to pitch a joke to her audience, while keeping them engaged and enthralled.
After just a few readings, my four-year-old was able to retell the story in her own way, yet still incredibly accurate. This is testament to both the simple engaging story, and the wonderful illustrations.

The story is very simple and not very developed but I think young children would enjoy it as a read-aloud story around Christmas time and find it funny. Because the book would be best suited to KS1 children, the use of made up words like ‘amazingest’ may suggest to children that this is a real word, causing misconceptions with the teaching about suffixes. I wouldn’t go out of my way to find this book to read to children however it’s not awful.

Oscar The Hungry Unicorn is a playful and wild read that you never really know where it's going, but you are along for the ride regardless. With Unicorns still being 'in', and this one-of-a-kind story, Oscar The Hungry Unicorn is sure to be a winner, entertaining families everywhere.
Oscar is a unicorn with an appetite and what appears to be a bottomless stomach. After accidentally eating his own stable, Oscar sets of on a one-of-kind-adventure looking for a new place to sleep and something else to eat! On the way to his new forever-home he tries a bit of the Witch's Gingerbread house, a pirate ship, a fairy grotto, dragon's den, before barely making an escape from a giant's table! Unable to fit in with any of his new 'friends' homes, or to leave heir homes uneaten, Oscar finds himself in a bit of trouble with the trolls from under the bridge when Princess Oola, the most unlikely of rescuers saves him and brings his back home to her castle where food is in abundance all year round.
Nikki Dyson's illustrations are bold, colourful and hilarious as Oscar eats everything and everyone around him all with this bored look on his face. Dyson has captured an unimpressed Unicorn and brought him to live with a colourful flare as he stumbles haphazardly around the mythological world looking for his next feed.What's more, Dyson's illustrations perfectly represent just about every little girls dream of a unicorn (though perhaps with a few more kilos hanging around from all those stables and stones he eats) that they could call their own. With his rainbow mane and tail, his sparkles and silver horn, Dyson has made sure that you can not walk past and miss Oscar in all his glory.
Lou Carter's text is simple, clear and work's perfectly with Dyson's illustrations to bring to life the most crazy unicorn story every imagined. Full of vivid imagery and mythology, Carter has filled in the gaps and created the world every child wishes they were able to escape too with their very own unicorn.
All in all, Oscar The Hungry Unicorn is mythology and imagination at it's absolute best and is sure to leave readers of all ages laughing for long after they have turned the final page.

I LOVED this story, it's hilarious, I fell in love with Oscar at its first "I don't give a damn". The illustrations are colourful and funny. The writing is simple and efficient. Everything I like in a pictures book.
