Above the Veil: Or, So the Drama, So the Sunstone
Tal and Milla get separated in this volume after much drama and fighting. Things aren't looking good for anyone. Milla is cranky and annoyed, wanting to rejoin her Shield Maidens. Tal is nervous and worried, trying to free his father and stop Sushin from whatever evil things he is up to. Oh that's right, to prevent the Veil from falling. Cause that would be bad. I think.
Milla eventually rejoins the Shield Maidens, who think it is a great time to attack the Castle. Oh great! Meanwhile, Tal, and his new frenemy, grumpy Crow, go above the Veil to help free the people. I don't know. This one got way too convoluted for me.
There is a lot going on -- but this volume definitely felt like a link between two books. Just a lot of journeying and positioning with nothing really happening at all. Spiritshadows Adras and Odris are the only things saving this book from being really blah.

This book was amazing. I wasn't sure how this one would continue the story, but it really did a great job. Really one of my favorite things about this book is how short it is. In all honesty, this whole series could probably be condensed into 2, maybe 3 books, just by combing books. But it is SO much more enjoyable and relaxing this way.
My favorite part, though? Milla. I love her character arc, and overall development and the huge part she plays in this story (and that awful cliffhanger, too.)
Aside from Milla, I adore the world. It's really fascinating. Not in an oh-my-gosh-this-could-happen-to-me way that a lot of Dystopian/Sci-fi/Fantasy novels often have. But just the plain and simple a) politics of the society, and b) the way the magic and shadows work. It's just fascinating.
The plot of this series is really original and, well, refreshing. Everything is new, and really intriguing.

In this story, Tal and Milla are fleeing from Sushin and his followers and while escaping, run into Crow and the Freefolk - Underfolk who wish to be free from their slave-like existence. The Freefolk are less than friendly, but eventually, Tal and Milla survive and find Tal's Great Uncle Ebbitt with the Freefolk and Tal and Milla go their separate ways. Tal and Crow attempt to find a way to rescue Tal's Father and the other missing sunstone Guardians and Milla goes back to the ice to warn the Crones about what is going on in the Castle. Many more adventures ensue in this fast paced adventure.

One thing I definitely am enjoying in this series is the character growth we see Milla and Tal go through and how their understanding of the world is shifted and change as they are pushed to deal with each other's worlds and the common unknown. This was a really interesting segment of their stories as we find out what happened to Tal's father, what Sushin really is, another interesting tidbit happens as Milla goes back to the Icecarls (that I have theory on......can't wait to see how right/wrong I am), and then a lot happens with the Icecarls....so many things happening in this book but none of it feels like "ugh, no he's just doing this to fluff the story".
