يسرد إداردو غاليانو تاريخ كرة القدم بطريقة ممتعة جدا، وكقراء وعشاق لكرة القدم فمحظوظون أن تولى كتابة تاريخها رجل هو باحث وروائي وصحفي. وكمثال بسيط على جودة الكاتب والكتاب فيكفي هذه السطور

The book read very poetic, moving with emotion and symbolism for much of the read. Galeano emphasized the beauty of the game and how the play is more important than the result. Further into the book, the writing becomes more methodical, less emotional, and gradually cynical...mimicking the points he makes through the progression of the game itself. His topics are sorted chronologically, and his love of the game seems to become more of a labor between his passion and the direction the game is moving. It ends on a somber note, but beautiful none-the-less. He conveys the tortured attachment every fan goes through with soccer, or sports in general.

This is a marvellous book about football, but also more than football. It's about politics, literature, art and life. Any book that (almost) begins 'The history of football is a sad voyage from beauty to duty' is going to be alright by me.
It's also good to read a book written by a South American about football. So it isn't the same stories recycled. The story of the 1966 World Cup is a very different story when told by an Uruguayan than when told by an Englishman is a glaringly obvious example.
There's a refreshingly poetic feel about it too. I love the writing. I like his sense of humour and his sense of the political, which occasionally meet together. For each World Cup he writes a little about what happened in the world, which sometimes throws up the names of writers and novelists that I've not come across before, but who I'd like to read more of. From the moment Cuba falls to Castro each World Cup preview features the same line -
"Well-informed sources in Miami were announcing the imminent fall of Fidel Castro, it was only a matter of hours."
His scathing politics also reach into the world of football itself and those delightful parasites that run it - FIFA - and the corrupting effect of money (and capitalism) on football as just fun.
It's a lovely book. The original edition finished in 1995, but this edition takes us up to 2010. Galeano died in 2012. I wish I'd read it in 1995. I'd have taken a whole different approach to how I wrote about football, even my Brentford match reports.

La literatura y el fútbol no están peleados, ya lo descubrí con Juan Villoro y hoy lo corroboro con Galeano; que forma tan hermosa de narrar las anécdotas más memorables en la historia de este deporte; llegó el punto en que realmente me sentía en algún mundial gritando por una selección en la final; además, describe muy bien el papel que desempeñan los jugadores, la afición, el arbitro,etc ...
Muestra la pasión que tienen la mayoría de las personas por este deporte, y te contagia esa pasión en cada una de sus páginas. El suceso en Maracaná lo leí más de una vez porque lo describió de tal forma que me sentía en aquella final.
Amo este tipo de ensayos cortos, transmiten el amor que sus escritores tienen por el fútbol y eso me agrada mucho

Una interesante narrativa que presenta una perspectiva amena y amplia del fútbol, incluso para los no apasionados con el fútbol (como yo). El texto proporciona datos y curiosidades de sumo interés para los aficionados, además de contextualizar los momentos con los eventos históricos citados, lo que hace un perfecto maridaje entre narrativa e historia.
Con el estilo particular de Galeano, el recorrido por la breve reconstrucción histórica del fútbol en el mundo, está lleno de reflexiones y críticas hacia el sistema económico mundial, que sin duda alguna ha tenido un impacto directo y evidente en la dinámica deportiva (ahora comercial masiva) del fútbol.
En un recorrido de lo micro a lo macro, las páginas, el humor y los datos proporcionados harán que las páginas se devoren en minutos y que deje un buen sabor de boca.
Con el estilo particular de Galeano, el recorrido por la breve reconstrucción histórica del fútbol en el mundo, está lleno de reflexiones y críticas hacia el sistema económico mundial, que sin duda alguna ha tenido un impacto directo y evidente en la dinámica deportiva (ahora comercial masiva) del fútbol.
