Beyah’s upbringing was extremely sad, considering she pretty much had to raise herself. It broke my heart when it was revealed that she had to have sex with someone in order to make money to feed herself. But, it was extremely inspiring to see her get a scholarship to Penn State for volleyball despite all of her hardship.
When she went to Texas and connected with Sara, Samson, and Marcos, I really started to see character development in her, which I loved. While I haven’t gone through the trauma that she had, I could relate a bit with her in terms of having to come out of your shell a little, even when it was uncomfortable. I loved her relationship with Samson, it seemed pretty pure and caused Beyah to change a lot (in a good way).
I kind of saw the classic CoHo twist coming, with Samson getting in trouble with the law. I was able to piece together the puzzle as the book went along, until the night that the police came into the house. But, even though I wasn’t taken off guard, I think the twist made sense in the story.
A downside for me was about how hung up Beyah was on Samson. I understand worrying about a guy a little bit after they go to jail, but putting things in perspective, it had only been 2 months or so. Don’t get me wrong, their love for each other was strong, but that aspect of it was kind of hard for me to relate to personally.
Overall, I loved this summer read by CoHo and would recommend!! You could say I grew heart bones…
