I actually enjoyed half of this book. Saxton and Ruhn should have had their own book, even if it would have only been considered a novella. This would have been a five star if it had been. Saxton has been around almost from the very beginning, and I feel his HEA was rushed and honestly sidelined by Peyton and Nova, whom were probably the most ridiculous characters in this story.

Since Lover At Last I have applauded Ward for featuring a m/m romance. But this? A total after thought and felt more like a paltry throw in to appease readers and the book definitely focused more on the love story of m/f here.

It seems the last few books have been a toss together. I wish she would slow down and give these characters and herself the dignity of great story telling (that we all know she is capable of) instead of a rush to the presses just to make money.

A book about Peyton getting 5 stars and becoming my new favourite? …..all I can say is that we stan character development, kids!

Prior to this book I hated Peyton, but his character development throughout Blood Fury is nothing short of phenomenal. He’s never asked to have a personality transplant and quit his stoner life, and yet through Novo he tempers the douchier parts of his personality and grows the fuck up. He realises that he was the one setting himself up to fail, and that he’s capable of far more physically, emotionally, and romantically, than he ever gave himself credit for.

By the end of the book he’s still recognisable as Peyton, yet is totally unrecognisable from the sexist, misogynistic douchebag of Book 1.

THAT’S. WHAT. I. WANT. TO. SEE.

Novo similarly undergoes a lot of character development without fundamentally compromising her identity. She learns to deal with her trauma, to let people in, and is called out for how she lets her past trauma be an excuse for mistreating people in the present.

I also loved that she also got to retain her kinky side! I’m still salty about JR Ward’s kink erasure with Axe, and I hope we get to see more of Axe and Novo frequenting The Keys together!

But holy hell, the real highlights of this book were SAXTON AND RUHN. The angst, the misunderstanding, the hesitation, the yearning, the love, the chemistry…….The sexual tension was off the charts and I thought my lil queer heart was about to explode. THIS is how you write a smutty romance and THIS is the smutty romance we all deserve!

Smut aside, it was wonderful getting to know Saxton and Ruhn in greater detail. While Ruhn’s story is about overt physical trauma and manipulation, Saxton’s hurt was a lot more quiet and introspective. The BDB books usually involve a Brother falling hard for their mate, but there are often consequences for those around them that we don’t get to see. I love that the Legacy spinoff series has shown how Marissa and Saxton were collateral damage to these relationships, and that their wounds don’t heal overnight.

This world has layers, y’all.

Ugh. This book was damn near perfect. A million stars.

I loved Peyton and his sense of humor. There were laugh out loud moments to the book. Nova had a dark secret that's heartbreaking, in contrast.

However, I always feel short-changed with these Black Dagger Legacy books. With the 2-story format, they feel like 2 novellas smashed together, with each story suffering for it. I especially thought Saxton and Ruhn's story was lacking. I liked them, but I didn't feel the loooove between the two of them.

Peyton & Nova
Saxton & Rhun

I was never a big fan of Peyton's, but actually enjoyed him in this book. I felt he did some growing up in this installment.

I also loved to see Saxton finally find the happiness he deserves!

Blood Fury by JR Ward brings us to the end of the published novels under the Black Dagger Legacy series. This installment also follows the style of the previous two novels by bringing together characters from the Black Dagger Brotherhood (BDB) series into the limelight. To be honest, (I guess like most readers), I was more interested in Ruhn and Saxton’s story than the main protagonists who happens to be Peyton, son of Peythone and Novalina (Novo), the final characters left without a happily ever after of their own from the new recruits, who happened to form the basis of this series.

Ruhn’s entrance into the series comes from the previous book, Blood Vow. As Bitty’s uncle, Ruhn is welcomed wholeheartedly into the Brotherhood “family”. Ruhn is the kind of character that you fall in love with from the start. His quiet and understated demeanor provokes reader interest from the very beginning. His giving and caring nature is prominent from the way he handled Bitty’s issue, saying goodbye to his past and moving on with an uncertain future, putting Bitty’s welfare and happiness above everything else.

We have all met Saxton, mainly because he was the character with whom Blaylock (now mated to Qhuinn), tried to move on with, given that Qhuinn ignored Blaylock’s armorous feelings and intentions towards him at the cost of hurting Blaylock at every turn possible. Since then, a lot has happened of course, leaving Saxton at loose ends, feeling the loneliness that comes from burying oneself with work to forget what could never be his. Along comes Ruhn and everything changes.

With every layer that is peeled back to reveal Ruhn’s character, I fell more deeply in love. Saxton too exposes painful bits of his past, which made me believe that they perfectly complement each other in every single way that matters. The fire between them was enough for me to reach out for a glass of water – they are combustible together. That is what happens when two characters worm their way into your hearts, and of course JR Ward is a master when it comes to sex scenes that are hot enough to singe in the best way possible.

That brings me to Novo and Peyton’s story that unfolds alongside. Novo is a character that is a bit hard to pin down at first, because she never reveals anything about herself that might expose any weaknesses that she might have. But understanding the betrayal she had faced at the hands of none other than her family and the man who had serviced her needing puts Novo in a whole different light. The pain she carries within herself and hugs close to her lest she allows someone else to come too close once again becomes clear when all is said and done.

Peyton, though richer than probably most of the families of glymera, has no happy moments to think of when it comes to his life and a father who demands from him but never roots for him. Peyton has mastered the art of not giving a damn, and enrolling as a recruit to fight had been the one thing where he had excelled at, against all odds. Though I never truly did warm up to Peyton’s character as much as I hoped I would, I loved the way he handled Novo. Peyton too had his own demons to fight before he could move on. His infatuation and unrequited love for none other than Paradise, who found her mate in Blood Kiss.

I quite don’t know whether JR Ward plans to write more stories under this series, given an interview recently which hinted at the possibility that there might no longer be novels forthcoming from this series. But who knows? One thing is for certain. I would definitely read them because I have mostly loved the books published featuring characters from the BDB series.

Recommended for fans of the series and fans of Saxton. Read this for Ruhn and Saxton’s story; you will definitely fall in love.

Final Verdict: Blood Fury brings closure to Saxton’s character, introducing to readers the fascinating man Ruhn proves to be. Loved both of them together to pieces.

I devoured this, and it was even better than anticipated. The brothers are present, but they don't overshadow this installment like they have the previous two. The focus is really on the trainees and Saxton/Ruhn.

No one does multiple storylines like Warden and both complex love stories are addicting. Poor Saxton deserves only the best, and his piece was everything I desperately longed for. I was pleasantly surprised how enjoyable Peyton/Novo were too. They hadn't really piqued my interest prior to this book, but their stories are compelling and their chemistry intense.

If you're a fan of this world, I don't see Blood Fury being a disappointment. It is definitely my favorite of the spinoff series.

Some of the writing seemed even more ridiculous than usual, and while it's entertaining it's almost becoming a bit much. I liked the Saxton plot more than the Payton/Novo one, but thought it worked out too quickly.
